24-Hour access to the fitness studio

Wanzl and IPWatch make it happen

     

24-hour access to the gym – a service that is becoming ever more attractive in the often very busy lives of working professionals. Network technology specialist IPWatch and Wanzl Access Solutions demonstrate how this is possible without significantly higher personnel costs and shift operation, currently in 85 FitX studios throughout Germany. Michael Kahl (MK), managing director of IPWatch and the project manager responsible for the collaboration with FitX Deutschland GmbH (FitX), explains the key points.

Mr. Kahl, how did the collaboration with FitX come about?

MK: IPWatch originated in classic network technology and ultimately specialized in branch customers. It is in particular these customers who benefit from the standardization of structures and systems that are precisely matched to customers’ individual wishes. The collaboration with FitX started more than 10 years ago. Initially, we developed the entire network structure in FitX’s headquarters in Essen. We then played a leading role in digitally linking each location. As we want to offer our customers a comprehensive service and the best possible solutions, we are responsible for fitting the branches with access control systems, among other things. This is where Wanzl Access Solutions comes into play. It does not make sense for us to produce our own entry separation systems. We therefore use Wanzl products to round off our portfolio in the best possible way.

 

What advantages does FitX derive from its cooperation with Wanzl?

MK: We act as an interface between FitX and Wanzl as well as a system integrator. This means that we implement Wanzl hardware in the FitX software system, bring the various system elements together via network technology and thereby ensure communication between the individual components. This results in various advantages for FitX. With us, you only have one central contact person who makes sure that everything runs smoothly. In addition, as experts with many years of experience, we know exactly which products fit perfectly into the branch system and, above all, which ones work.          

 

“Work” is a good keyword. Are there any criteria that are essential for the access system hardware products to fulfill?

MK: From the point of view of a system integrator, the devices should, of course, have easily controllable, open interfaces. In the FitX example, we achieve this with the Wanzl products via the potential-free contacts and network interfaces. This makes integration into the software system easier. Together with capable colleagues on the hardware partner’s side, system integration is almost child’s play. Seamless control via the fire alarm control panel is, of course, an absolute must. In the FitX studios, we are currently installing the Sirio turnstile in combination with Wanzl’s dedicated access point, Technoport. With a passage width of 120 cm / 47.2 inches, the Technoport stands by as the main escape route. We have also integrated Sirio into the fire alarm control panel. In an emergency, the arms are set to “permanently open,” i.e. the bars fold down and are parallel to the sides of the system. The passage is thus completely clear, and the escape route is additionally widened. In the case of FitX, this works perfectly with Sirio’s two-arm design.

 

What practical tasks does Wanzl’s entrance system carry out?

MK: FitX promises its members that they have 24-hour access to every studio. In other words, if someone is registered as a member in Augsburg, but is temporarily staying in Berlin, they will also have around-the-clock access with their membership card and be able to train in their customary environment at their individual conditions. Consequently, all branches must be networked and the entrance system process must be standardized. The latter involves both the interior and authentication. In addition to Sirio and Technoport, we use Wanzl’s stainless steel customer guidance system in the entrance area for easy navigation. The check-in process is driven by RFID technology. Members hold their membership card up to the RFID scanner, which checks the stored rights at lightning speed, then access is granted and training can begin.   

 

Can members’ rights be changed?

MK: Yes, all membership cards are individually configured via the software. As the Sirio turnstile and the software communicate with each other at each individual check-in, Sirio detects possible changes and responds accordingly.

 

As an “interface”, fast responses from the Wanzl service staff are also important for you. What is the defining factor of the collaboration with Wanzl?

MK: A high level of expertise in finding solutions, short coordination channels and a focus on the satisfaction of joint customers. We have been working with Wanzl for many years, always on an equal footing and with the pleasant feeling that we are not just a number, especially when it comes to prompt service delivery. Wanzl takes its customers seriously, competent partners provide advice, and solutions are sought and found as quickly as possible.
