Rolling towards inclusion with Ben's Cart

New Wanzl trolley for special children

Shopping is always a smooth ride with a trolley from Wanzl. The latest example of this is the new model, Ben's Cart – a special model for mothers, fathers and their special children with disabilities.

Ben lives in Gerolzhofen in Franconia, Germany The six-year-old was born with several disabilities and experiences some physical impairments. He is not able to walk or stand by himself, for example. His mother, Britta Süssmeier, a customer at the REWE supermarket in Gerolzhofen, contacted retail manager Günter Götzelmann. Her request: "A shopping trolley with space for Ben, because it was clear that he would soon be too big for a child seat." The retailer reacted immediately and began searching for a suitable special model.

He found exactly what he was looking for at Wanzl, the world's leading manufacturer of shopping trolleys. In the UK, disabled trolleys from Wanzl have been coasting the supermarket aisles for some time already. This accessible model is now also available in Germany, marketed as "Ben's Cart". The trolley is designed specifically for mobility-impaired children like Ben: the comfortably padded seat area with a load capacity of 35 kg and an adjustable safety belt provides plenty of space and direct eye contact to their parents. Now, Ben can comfortably stretch out his legs, and when he gets taller, he can use the footrest. Thanks to the fifth wheel, the trolley can be manoeuvred easily and steered in any direction, even under heavy loads and in narrow aisles. The ergonomic handle unit aids barrier-free shopping, and the 97-litre shopping basket provides plenty of space for the goods.

Positive reactions from social media


Ben's parents are not the only ones with this problem, as can be seen from the response on social media to Ben's Cart: the news about the disabled trolley has now reached over 100,000 users in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Encouragement is pouring in from all sides: Mr Götzelmann is collecting nothing but "Likes" and "Thumbs up" for Ben's Cart on the REWE Facebook page, together with comments like, "A brilliant idea – more, please!" On REWE's online platform www.rewe.de/service/kontakt/anfrage customers can express their opinion on the new, disabled access trolley.

Customers with reduced mobility can use the shopping trolley for wheelchair users.
